A hidden gem on the Sognefjord
This family-run eco-lodge is set on a former fish farm up the valley from the quiet town of Aurland on the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. Truly one of the most incredible places we’ve ever stayed. The owners, Tone & Bjørn, are friendly, enthusiastic and charming and their passion and love for 29/2 Aurland, their community and the natural beauty of Norway is immediately evident. Each room is unique, cozy and beautifully decorated offering you a home away from home. You’ll find log burning stoves, old photographs, charming decoration, cozy blankets and sheepskin. The old smoke house on site where Bjørn’s father used to cure the wild salmon is now where dinner is served. You’ll enjoy a communal table and meet other guests from all over the world. The meals are all inspired by what’s in season and every bite is sourced locally and absolutely delicious. Fjærland Fjordstove Hotel is one of our favorite boutique, family-run hotels in all of Europe. A small, charming hotel with just 15 rooms, each area is unique and tastefully decorated. The hotel is situated right on the Fjærlandsfjord, a branch of the mighty Sognefjord, and has panoramic views towards glaciers, mountains and the fjord itself. The meals are all homemade with fresh, locally soured ingredients and highlight Norway’s delicious cuisine. The restaurant features their own brand of beer and an exceptional wine list. From your doorstep, you’ll have access to incredible hiking trails, glacier treks, bicycle routes and you can even go kayaking or fishing on the fjord. The staff and owners are friendly and knowledgeable and are always enthusiastic about helping to arrange outdoor activities. An off-the-beaten path town in a truly special location, Fjærland Fjordstove Hotel is a hidden gem.

3. SKOGADALSBØEN HUT |
JOTUNHEIMEN, NORWAY

A special spot in the heart of the Jotunheimen
Skogadalsbøen is a mountain hut tucked away in the western part of the Jotunheimen, owned by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). This is a spectacular - almost magical - setting for a hut with views of the surrounding high peaks and the lush green valleys below. The hut sits at 2,740ft above sea level in the lovely Utladalen Valley. Originally, the site was the location of several summer mountain farms until the hut was built in the late 1800s. Skogadalsbøen can only be accessed by foot and is in a fantastic location for hiking hut-to-hut in the Jotunheimen. Hiking on the trail that leads you to the hut, you’ll immediately feel as though you’ve walked into a fairy tale. Surrounded by lush forests and meadows, the views to the high mountains are stunning. The hut hosts are welcoming and friendly and you’ll meet other hikers from all over the world. Enjoy a glass of wine or beer on the picnic tables outside as you watch the sunset or cozy up with a sheepskin by the fire over a game of cards. For meals, you’ll enjoy a hearty dinner of local specialities and a scrumptious breakfast full of fresh breads, jams (lingonberry is our favorite), homemade butter, brown cheese and juice, fueled up and ready for your next day of hiking.

4. HOTEL PARK BERGEN | BERGEN, NORWAY

Historic hotel on a hill
Hotel Park Bergen is a charming hotel made up of two historic buildings, perched on a hill just a few blocks from the famous Grieg Hall. This family-run, boutique hotel is a beautiful contrast of modern & traditional and you’ll feel welcomed and right at home as soon as you enter. The hotel was first built in the 19th century for wealthy merchants. Today, the 1800s architecture remains but the 35 rooms are bright, colorful and the owners have done a tasteful job at mixing traditional furniture and antiques with contemporary furnishings and fun pops of color. Most of the rooms offer gorgeous views overlooking the city of Bergen and the surrounding mountains. The location is ideal: you’re in the heart of a lovely, quiet neighborhood but close enough to the historic center of Bergen so you’re only a short walk to Bryggen. Each morning, the staff makes a delicious homemade breakfast for you to enjoy that highlights a classic Norwegian breakfast buffet of homemade granola, fresh yogurt, fruits, eggs, fresh-baked breads and smoked trout. In the evening, the lobby and bar area is a great place to enjoy a glass of wine before heading into town to experience one of the many fantastic restaurants in Bergen.

5. THE THieF | OSLO, NORWAY

Stealing you away from everyday life
The Thief is an upscale, stylish boutique hotel on Tjuvholmen in Oslo, overlooking the Oslo Fjord waterfront. A special location, the hotel is surrounded by art galleries and quiet walkways. A collection of excellent restaurants and fun bars along Aker Brygge harbor are just steps away and it’s an easy 10-15 minute walk to the city center of Oslo. The name “The Thief” alludes to recent art thefts (including Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” that was ultimately recovered) and their mission to “steal you away from everyday life”. The vibe of the hotel is modern and has a focus on art with select pieces displayed throughout the lobby, elevators, restaurants and rooms. The rooms are thoughtfully decorated with large windows, bold colors, contemporary furnishings & amenities and all have balconies that offer a direct view of the waterfront. The staff are knowledgable about everything-Oslo and are eager to help in any way they can. All guests at The Thief have free unlimited access to the Astrup Fearnley Museum and to the hotel’s incredible spa. There is a great seafood restaurant on site as well as hotel roof bar where there are magnificent views over the city to enjoy over a pre- or post-dinner cocktail.
